Originally a small oratory, oriented in same direction as the rebuilt church, the original "chiesetta" had five chapels, which Fra Anonimo (Libro Obblighi, p. 367) says were dedicated to the Crucified Christ and the Carmelite martyr S. Angelo on one side and to the prophets Elijah and Elisha on the other side of the cappella maggiore, which would have honored the Virgin Mary and contained the Madonna del Popolo. Remnants of oratory, which was torn down in 1328, may have been conserved in first altar to St. Agnes on retrofacade.
