The church, cloister, hallway, courtyard, chapter room and other buildings at Santo Spirito have been under the care of a community of Augustinian friars since its foundation. It can thus be referred to more specifically as a friary, housing a community of men who focused on the sacred ministry of preaching, moving from place to place and professing poverty (in contrast to monks). Mendicant friaries are also sometimes referred to as "convents," though in English this term is typically reserved for female communities.
