A church dedicated to St. Michael the archangel stood on this space since at least the 11th century with earliest document dated 1055 when it was under the jurisdiction of the Abbey of Nonantola near Modena. Among the initial 36 parishes of Florence, the church passed to a group of Olivetan monks from San Miniato al Monte and then to the Theatine Fathers, who completely rebuilt the church.
