Canonici Regolari di S. Salvatore

This group of Augustinian canons (priests living together under the Rule of St. Augustine) originated in Bologna, settling first outside of Florence at the church of San Domenico a Scopeto, from which they took their nickname Scopetini. Stefano Rosselli mentions them in his discussions of each of the three churches where they resided in the sixteenth century: S. Pier Gattolini (1530-1547), S. Lucia sul Prato (1547/8-1575), and S. Jacopo Soprarno (1575-1703).

Notes

  • [a] The Umiliati fathers retained control at Ognissanti, but were replaced at Santa Lucia by the Scopetini.
  • [b] The Scopetini moved from S. Lucia sul Prato to S. Jacopo in 1575. Fourteen canons were in residence at the 1632 census. They were forced out by Duke Cosimo III in 1703 to make way for the Padri della Missione.
  • [c] Less than two decades after their transfer to S. Pier Gattolini, the canons moved across the river to S. Lucia sul Prato, where they displeased locals with their management of the parish, especially hands-off after their relocation to S. Jacopo Soprarno in 1575. For more on these disputes see David Rosenthal, “Big Piero, the Empire of the Meadow, and the Parish of Santa Lucia: Claiming Neighborhood in the Early Modern City.” Journal of Urban History 32, no. 5 (July 1, 2006): 677–92, esp. 681, 685-686.
  • [d] S. Piero Gattolini was given to the Canons Regular of S. Salvatore, also known as the Scopetini after their church at San Donato a Scopeto, which had been destroyed in the Siege of Florence and resulted in the group's move into the city.
