Pandolfini, Giannozzo di Pierfilippo di Giannozzo di Pierfilippo di M. Giannozzo

Description

Giannozzo di Pierfilippo Pandolfini died in the Maremma and was brought back to Florence, first lying in what must have been his parish church of San Michele Visdomini before being brought to the Badia for burial. The monks noted that his funeral was quite grand with 380 large candles and many prelates in attendance. An office of the dead was said on January 12th and the scribe said that with the windows closed and many candles it was a beautiful sight (un bel vedere).

Notes

  • [a] The Badia's Libro dei defunti records that Giannozzo died in the Maremma and was brought to the Badia for burial on January 11th, 1592.
  • [b] Despite a long entry in the Badia's Libro dei defunti, the scribe is not precise about where Giannozzo di Pierfilippo was buried. Given that his extravagant funeral was held in the church between the choir and high altar, it seems most logical that he was buried in the family's ancient tomb rather than their newer chapel, especially since he was not a direct descendant of Battista di Pandolfo, the chapel's patron.
