Notes

  • [a] His monastery's Registro Nuovo records his day of death on May 24th, and that he is buried in the monastery, but did not give the year. (Bent, p. 80)
  • [b] In his biography of Lorenzo Monaco in the first edition of his Vite (1550, p. 216), Giorgio Vasari notes that he was buried in the usual tomb of the monks (nella solita loro sepultura pietosamente riposto). He also quotes an epitaph (p. 217), but this was surely only a literary memorial and not carved on any of the monks' tombs in the chapter room. It is impossible to know which of the four graves was used for don Lorenzo, but we can be certain he was buried alongside his brethren in the chapter room. It is puzzling that Vasari omitted his description of Lorenzo's death and honorific epitaph in his second edition.
