Notes
[a] Though several families were known via inscriptions and coats of arms in the high altar chapel, it was first and foremost, as Stefano Rosselli notes, the altar of the Camaldolese community. The first church was demolished and replaced with a larger one in the fourteenth century. This church was significantly remodeled in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and finally deconsecrated in July 1866.
[b] Given that Don Garzia was the Abbot General of the Camaldolese Order, his tomb not only honored him, but also his order.
[c] Ser Franceschino left one-third of his estate to the monks of Santa Maria degli Angeli in 1365.
[d] To allow the monks at Camaldoli to remain cloistered, third order lay brothers, known as conversi served as go-betweens to the outside world attending to chores that required them to leave the monastic enclosure such as obtaining food, clothing, and other items needed by the community as well as making and receiving payments.
