Notes

  • [a] According to Pompeo Litta, don Niccolaio was born Alessandro di Niccolò di Pagno degli Albizzi at an unspecified date. When he joined the Camaldolese monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli, he adopted the new name Niccolaio, presumably in honor of his father. He also honored his parents and kinsmen through a bequest that they receive a special anniversary mass on February 13th, most likely at the high altar, which he had furnished with altar cloths and other items worth 100 gold florins. See Bent (1993, p. 306n12, 641, doc. 29, and 712, doc. 90). Though he had several brothers, none of them seem to have had any children, ending Niccolò's direct line with his sons.
  • [b] The Registro Nuovo records don Niccolaio's death in the convent. He was most likely laid to rest in one of the monks' tombs in the chapter room.
