S. Pier Maggiore
1078 to 1172

Notes

  • [a] The oldest quarters of the city were based on the four city gates that provided access through the initial circuit of city walls constructed in 1078 on the foundations of the Roman castrum. The porta San Piero was the eastern gate at the end of the city's primary east-west street, or decumanus, in the direction of today's piazza Beccaria.
