The Adimari were one of the forty families named by Dante in Paradiso 16.88-139 as great in his grandfather Cacciaguida's day, but by his time diminished: "per che non dee parer mirabil cosa / ciò ch'io dirò de li alti Fiorentini / onde è la fama nel tempo nascosa." (Think it not then a marvel if I bring / To mind full many a noble Florentine / Whose fame is hid with time, a vanished thing. Sayers trans.) The family developed numerous branches under different surnames, and tracing individual members in the family trees found in the Carte Mariani Dei and Carte Pucci can be quite difficult as the trees are crowded and seem to contain mistakes of descent.
According to a notation in the Priorista Mariani (248, fol. 228) priors listed under the surname Bonfantini were in fact from the Adimari family, as further explained in notes by the same hand in the Passerini archive (193/3, ins. 2, fol. 2v-6, esp. fol. 5v). Thus, the nine priorates listed under the Bonfantini with a shield divided into four diagonal sections alternating gold and blue in the Priorista Mariani (party per saltire Or and azure, fol. 227v) have been added to the total given for the Adimari here. See the notations at each family (Manoscritti 248, fols. 156 and 228) as well as a lengthy explanation of the confusion in Passerini 193/3, ins. 2, fol. 2v-6.
