Notes

  • [a] In his sepoltuario, Francesco della Foresta notes that Coluccio's tomb was just inside the main door and that the inscription faced the Cappella Maggiore, that is, toward the liturgical east.
  • [b] Given that the tomb inscription carries no date, it is very likely that Coluccio commissioned it himself.
  • [c] According to the Priorista Mariani, the last male descendant, Simone di Benedetto Salutati died in 1602, and his estate went to the foundling hospital of the Innocenti, who in turn gave it to the confraternity of the sacrament that met in S. Romolo.
  • [d] The Ospedale degli Innocenti conceded the Salutati tomb to the Compagnia del Sacramento di San Romolo.
  • [e] According to Novati (p. 390), Piera died after a two-week illness and was buried in San Romolo. Presuming that the family tomb had been installed by then, she was surely buried in it.
  • [f] Gravediggers recorded Piero's death and burial in San Romolo, his home parish. There is little reason to doubt that he was buried anywhere other than his father's tomb, where his stepmother Piera had been buried in 1396.
  • [g] Marsilio turned eighteen on December 20th, 1438 when he would have gained his full inheritance after his father's death around 1430.
  • [h] The Priorista Mariani notes that Simone died on March 30, 1602 while Novati (p. 400) reports that it was instead on March 3, 1603.
  • [i] The sepoltuari indicate that the della Torre tomb was between the Salutati monument inside the main door and the Guidacci chapel in the right aisle.
