[b] Though they are not documented, the chapel frescoes by Nardo di Cione are dated to the 1350s while the altarpiece was commissioned from his brother Andrea Orcagna in 1357.
[c] Pompeo Litta credits Tommaso as the founder of the chapel dedicated to his namesake and the patron of Andrea Orcagna to decorate it.
[d] The inscription on the arch supporting the stairs to the chapel notes that the three tombs at its feet were intended for the sons of Rosso di Geri, their wives, and their descendants. A family tree kept in the Carte Mariani Dei indicates that all of Rosso's descendants dined at Santa Maria Novella on the eighth day after the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas (ottava di S. Tommaso d'Aquino) and could bring a companion (compagno).
