Notes

  • [a] Given that his cousin Rosso di Strozza had no children, Rosso di Geri seems the more likely candidate for the dedication of the crypt tomb at Santa Croce, set up for his sons. However, Rosso di Geri is also honored in Santa Maria Novella on the tomb under the large family chapel in the church transept, complicating our understanding of who set up the tomb in the Franciscan crypt. That it still belonged to the family is confirmed by a notation copied from a sepoltuario dated 1441 indicating that Rosso di Geri's great-great grandson Marcello di Strozza had inherited it. Another clue is that a son of an otherwise unidentified Benedetto Strozzi was buried at Santa Croce on 25 July 1400, presumably in this tomb. See ASFi, Ufficiali poi Magistrato della Grascia, 187, fol. 358v.
  • [b] The inscription on the arch supporting the stairs to the chapel notes that the three tombs at its feet were intended for the sons of Rosso di Geri, their wives, and their descendants.
