Notes

  • [a] Stefano Rosselli was not sure whether the tomb never carried arms or if they had been worn away, but despite the restoration in 1585, by the middle of the seventeenth century the tomb slab was without decoration other than the inscriptions.
  • [b] A notice dated February 12th, 1310 (n.s.) refers to the heirs of messer Paniccia Frescobaldi, indicating that he had died before that year. Cited by Isidoro del Lungo as under the date 12 Feb 1309 (o.s.) among "certi Frammenti e protocolli di Provvisioni annessi ai Registri delle Provvisioni" at the Archivio di Stato di Firenze in Dante ne’ tempi di Dante. Ritratti e Studi. Bologna: N. Zanichelli, 1888, 289n1.
  • [c] A small plaque at the foot of Paniccia Frescobaldi's tomb indicates that Lorenzo di Bartolomeo Frescobaldi restored it in 1585. If he is Lorenzo di Bartolomeo di Lorenzo di Niccolò di Paolo, then he was Paniccia's first cousin eight times removed. How he came to be responsible for or have rights to Paniccia's tomb remains to be explained, but Paniccia's line died out in the fifteenth or early sixteenth century.
  • [d] The Frescobaldi slab is described by Rosselli as "in the middle of the church at the foot of the Cappella Maggiore."
  • [e] The Piaciti tomb is described by Rosselli as to the west of the Frescobaldi slab, "turning toward the [main] door in the middle of the church after the little stairs."
