Notes

  • [a] The completion of the family chapel begun by Batista Pandolfini was protracted over the course of the sixteenth century, and the family tomb he requested was not ready for his burial at the time of his death. The Badia's Libro dei defunti describes Battista's burial in a deposit in the chapel's sacristy on May 21st, 1511, that is, not in a permanent tomb: "Batista Pandolfini fu messo in diposito nella sacrestia di S. Stephano" (fol. 5).

Eugenio Gamurrini also notes the presence of a deposit in the chapel that held the remains of Cardinal Niccolò Pandolfini, brought from Pistoia in late 1518 or 1519. Gamurrini described this temporary tomb as above the ground, suggesting it was likely a stone or metal casket. Though he does not specify its location in the chapel, it may well have been the same deposit used for his nephew's burial in the sacristy.

Battista's remains were likely transferred to a grave in the chapel before October 1518 when his mother was buried in "his tomb," while Cardinal Niccolo's were not transferred until the later sixteenth century, according to Gamurrini, during the reign of Pope Pius V (1566-1572).
  • [b] Though the tomb described as that of Battista in 1518 may be the same deposit described in 1511, it is more likely that a grave was installed in the family chapel and his remains were moved there prior to the burial of his mother Costanza on October 18th, 1518.
