Notes

  • [a] The burial record of Battista Pandolfini's mother in 1518 notes that she was laid to rest in her son's tomb in the family chapel: "fu sepolta in Sancto Stephano nella sepoltura di Batista." Though this entry does not specify where this tomb was in the chapel, it was likely not the temporary grave described in Battista's burial record of 1511 as a "diposito nella sacrestia di S. Stephano." This difference in descriptors suggests that a more permanent grave had been fashioned in the chapel itself, though not decorated beyond more than a simple cover. Successive burials in the family chapel are described as in "the family tomb" ("nella Cappella di Santo Stefano nella loro sepoltura"). The family tomb's final design and current appearance dates to 1592.
  • [b] Battista would not be honored by name in the chapel until the installation of a family monument in the center of the chapel's floor in 1592.
  • [c] Though the tomb described as that of Battista in 1518 may be the same deposit described in 1511, it is more likely that a grave was installed in the family chapel and his remains were moved there prior to the burial of his mother Costanza on October 18th, 1518.
