Notes

  • [a] Giovanni di Ghiberto Ghiberti left his estate to his brother, the Camaldolse monk don Michele, requesting that he ensure a chapel be built in the cloister.
  • [b] The first mass was celebrated in the Ghiberti chapel on All Saints Day in 1364.
  • [c] The altarpiece showing the Trinity with Saints Romuald and John the Evangelist carried the date 1365, indicating it was installed after the chapel's first mass.
  • [d] In his testament dated June 5th, 1363, Giovanni requested anniversary masses on the date of his death and on the feast of Saint Romuald (June 19th), to whom his chapel was dedicated.
  • [e] At some point after Rosselli's sepoltuario (1657) but before Richa's description (1759), the chapel was conceded to the della Stufa family, who moved their altarpiece into it, an occurrence that has caused some confusion in the literature.
  • [f] When the della Stufa took possession of the St. Romuald chapel at some point prior to 1759, they moved the altarpiece from their original chapel dedicated to St. Andrew to the former Ghiberti chapel.
