Notes

  • [a] Agnolo di Vanni dal Canto left funds in his testament written the day before he died to endow a chapel in the chapter room dedicated to St. Anthony Abbot. In addition to building and furnishing the chapel, the monks were required to celebrate a mass for Agnolo's soul each year on the feast of Saint Anthony (17 January) and the Assumption of the Virgin (15 August). See Bent 1993, 620, doc. 10; 711, doc. 89; 719, doc. 96; and Tigler 54-55.
  • [b] Mass was said in the new chapel of Saint Anthony on the feast of All Saints (Ognissanti). It is unknown whether an altarpiece requested in Agnolo del Canto's will was reused in the old chapel or made anew, though likely the former. It was replaced by the Corsi family when they took over the chapel's patronage rites. This painting does not seem to survive.
  • [c] The monks decided to expand their chapter room with several new chapels which necessitated the destruction and rebuilding of the Saint Anthony Abbot chapel in honor of Agnolo dal Canto's original bequest.
  • [d] The dal Canto chapel dedicated to St. Anthony Abbot passed to the Corsi family. While Tigler (2022, p. 61 and n90) gives the date of 1411 for this transfer, it seems instead to have taken place in 1529 when the Camaldolese monastery of San Benedetto fuori Porta a Pinti was demolished and its artworks brought to the Angeli. According to Richa, a plaque in the chapel dedicated in 1656 describes the original Corsi family chapel in San Benedetto
  • [e] Agnolo dal Canto stipulated in his will that he wanted to use part of his estate to fund a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony Abbot at the Camaldolese monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli even though his tomb was in Santa Maria Novella.
  • [f] The chapel was endowed by Agnolo dal Canto, but it remains unclear whether his coat of arms was visible in the chapel.
