To Domenico Corsi, son of Francesco, generous benefactor of Camaldolese monks, who quickly in the year 1404, in the monastery of Saint Benedict outside the walls, endowed and decorated a chapel of Saint Anthony Abbot appointed for his family. Bartolo his son took care that another chapel to Saint Martin be built in the same monastery, which having been destroyed in the last siege, the monks caused the image and useful sacred vessels to be removed here to the Angels.

Mauro Corsi, presently Abbot Antonio, son of Camillo, born from the straight descent of the said Domenico, with the favor obtained from his brother Giovanni out of his bequest, living and thinking about death, here where he accepted the spirit of the inner man, now to the entrusted redeemer in this dust if it will please God, he laid out a tomb for his dust and ashes and for others of the Corsi family in the year 1656.

Notes

  • [a] The altarpiece commissioned for the chapel of Saint Anthony in San Benedetto fuori Porta a Pinti was removed to Santa Maria degli Angeli during the siege of Florence in 1529. This may correspond to the year in which the Corsi family took possession of the chapel dedicated to the same saint in the Angeli chapter room. However, the tombstone commemorating these events, as well as the dedication by its patron Abbot Antonio Corsi, was not installed until 1656.
  • [b] The Corsi family may have taken possession of the dal Canto chapel dedicated to St. Anthony Abbot around the time that their chapel of the same dedication in San Benedetto fuori Porta a Pinti was destroyed and the altarpiece carrying their arms in the predella was brought to Santa Maria degli Angeli. However, given that the tombstone describing these events carried the date 1656, it is highly possible that the family did not take possession until the mid-seventeenth century.
  • [c] A stone with a lengthy inscription was installed by Abbot Antonio Corsi in 1656.
  • [d] The tombstone commemorating the family chapel in S. Benedetto fuori della Porta Pinti was installed in 1656.
