Notes

  • [] While Rosselli clearly transcribes this tomb's inscription with Ambrogio's name in the nominative case (Ambrosius), it is unclear whether the tomb had additional text making the tomb (sepulcrum) the object of his action (ponendum curavit) or that Rosselli or earlier sources erred in the transcription which should have rendered Ambrogio's name in the genitive case (Ambrosii).
  • [a] Ambrogio's arms carried a rampant griffin.
  • [b] By Rosselli's day, this tomb had been moved from its original location in line with the main door and high altar and reinstalled in the counterfacade under the nuns' choir.
  • [c] Rosselli is not specific as to whether Ambrogio's tomb was touching or further east of the tomb just inside the church door, he describes it simple as "sopra" or above it, but it seems clear that both tombs were along the longitudinal axis of the church.
