Notes

  • [a] According to Barker (74n17), Alfonso left not only funds for building works at San Barnaba but also specific instructions for his epitaph in his will dated February 1562 (o.s.). She cites ASF, Notarile antecosimiano 413 (Andrea di Giovanni), fols. 255r-258v.
  • [b] According to Barker (74n17), Alfonso died on February 12th, 1562 (o.s.), as recorded in the Grascia gravedigger archives. Interestingly, his tomb notes the modern, rather than Florentine, year of his death, noting that he died on the day before the ides of February 1563, or February 12th.
  • [c] Stefano Rosselli describes the tomb as near the del Neca altar, but it is currently installed in the church's counter-facade.
  • [d] Alfonso's tomb indicates that it was installed by his widow and unnamed children, of which Fulvio was one.
  • [e] Alfonso's tomb indicates that it was installed by his widow and unnamed children, of which Lucrezia was one.
  • [f] Alfonso's tomb indicates that it was installed by his widow and unnamed children, of which Pomponio was one.
  • [g] Alfonso's tomb indicates that it was installed by his widow and unnamed children, of which Sigismondo was one.
  • [h] Barker reports that Sigismondo was buried in San Barnaba, we presume in his father's tomb.
