Notes

  • [a] The main door to the church was part of its original fourteenth-century construction and is likely when the arms of the Florentine Republic, Florentine people, and Parte Guelfa were installed in its architrave.
  • [b] According to Stefano Rosselli, the arms of the Arte de Medici e Speziali, the guild responsible for the church, were in several places throughout the complex. The glazed terracotta relief with their arms (The seated Virgin and Child within a tabernacle) and inscription was made by Giovanni della Robbia soon after the convent was given to a group of Carmelite nuns, perhaps as a way to re-emphasize that the guild held ius patronatus
  • [c] The glazed terracotta arms of the Doctors and Spicers Guild are attributed to the della Robbia workshop under the leadership of Giovanni della Robbia between 1528 and 1529.
