Notes

  • [] It is quite possible that the text copied by Stefano Rosselli from an older sepoltuario ("il sepoltuario antico"), was in fact a notation of ownership rather than a transcription of the tomb's inscription.
  • [a] The tomb was extant in 1500 when Jacopo di Piero Tedaldi mentioned it in his family chronicle. It seems to have been completely eroded or disappeared by the early seventeenth century, for Francesco della Foresta makes no mention of the tomb in his early seventeenth-century sepoltuario (ASFi, Manoscritti, 628, fol. 1-20). Stefano Rosselli confirmed that neither the arms nor inscription were visible in his day, but in 1663, what could be a fragment from Maffeo Tedaldi's tomb was installed in the new chapter room together with a new marble inscription plaque. This ensemble was later embedded in the north wall of the small cloister.
  • [b] The Tedaldi arms on this tomb are an older version of the family symbol, where four balls are in the place of the later rampant lion. The arms had been worn away by the early seventeenth century, and were refreshed in 1663.
  • [c] The inscription currently adorning the ancient Tedaldi coat of arms was carved in 1663 when the tomb was reinstalled in the new chapter room by fra Evangelista Tedaldi, for the letterforms of the new marble inscription match those on the macigno frame containing the arms. The original tomb certainly would have had an inscription, but whether it was identical to the restored one is impossible to say. Stefano Rosselli, citing a "sepoltuario antico," indicates that the original carried the words "Filiorum Maffei Tedaldi," the phrase adopted for fra Evangelista's later renovation, which might very well have been based on Rosselli's account. It should be noted that the sepoltuario antico may simply have been a notation of ownership rather than a transcription of the original tomb's inscription.
  • [d] Jacopo di Piero Tedaldi recorded in his family chronicle that his ancestor Maffeo was buried at the Badia in 1295. He noted that the chest (cassone) was still in place in the year 1500.
  • [e] In his family chronicle of 1500, Jacopo di Piero Tedaldi recorded that his ancestor Maffeo died in 1295 at a very old age and was buried at the Badia with great pomp and expense.
  • [f] Though the tomb may have carried an inscription indicating it was for the sons of Maffeo, a family chronicle notes that Finiguerra was buried in S. Caterina, Pisa.
  • [g] Though the tomb may have carried an inscription indicating it was for the sons of Maffeo, a family chronicle notes that messer Lorenzo was buried in S. Caterina, Pisa.
  • [h] Though the tomb may have carried an inscription indicating it was for the sons of Maffeo, a family chronicle notes that Bartolo was buried in his own personalized tomb in S. Pier Maggiore.
  • [i] The carved coat of arms may be a fragment of the original tomb of messer Maffeo Tedaldi, freshened up during its reinstallation in 1663 with a clarification of the forms and new inscription.
