Notes

  • [] The text inscribed on the banderoles woven through the crossbones decorating the slab is based on Col. 3:3: Mortui enim estis, et vita vestra est abscondita cum Christo in Deo.
  • [a] For the history of the Compagnia di San Luca and Accademia del disegno visit the website of the Accademia delle arti del disegno.
  • [b] According to the Catalogo generale, fra Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli obtained rights to the chapter house to make a common tomb for all artists who did not have their own. The tomb is attributed to him, and he likely designed the architecture of the chapel as well.
  • [c] The chapel was made out of the old chapter room of the Servites, so only a consecration and decoration were needed to make the new burial chapel.
  • [d] A notarial document from 1565 recorded the transfer of ius patronatus to the academy.
  • [e] Though Pontormo died and was buried in the Annunziata cloister in 1557, his bones were ceremoniously removed to be placed in the new communal tomb of the Accademia del disegno when the chapel containing it was consecrated on July 25th, 1562.
  • [f] Lorenzo Bartolini was the last academician to be buried in the Chapel of St. Luke.
