S. Romolo 7.5a Cappella dell'Antella:

Notes

  • [a] Note that the new church of San Romolo, built in 1349-50, was oriented to the north, with the main door on the south side facing the Piazza della Signoria. Thus the actual orientation of the high altar was to the north, while the chapel is catalogued according to liturgical orientation at the east.
  • [b] Ugolino Giugni may have provided a new altarpiece for the high altar during his tenure as parish rector, which he held from 1426 until he was appointed bishop of Volterra in 1461.
  • [c] Rosselli cites a sepoltuario dated 1580 indicating that patronage rights belonged to the Giugni family, but in his day, and possibly always, the chapel had neither arms nor inscriptions. He did mention an altarpiece with a small portrait, which he speculated was a former prior of the church but did not directly connect to the Giugni. Giuseppe Richa notes that the Florentine Canon Ugolino Giugni was rector of the parish in 1426.
  • [d] Stefano Rosselli reported that the high altar chapel had no arms, inscriptions, or other signs of patronage. He did cite a sepoltuario dated 1580 that indicated the Giugni family had jus patronatus, though he does not specify when they held these rights.
