The original church of San Romolo, extant since at least 1060, was demolished in 1349 as part of the expansion of the Piazza della Signoria. It was rebuilt along the north side of the enlarged piazza, with its primary entrance on the south side, giving rise to the name S. Romolo in Piazza. Note that though the church was oriented to the north, with the right aisle at the east, and the left, at the west, tomb orientations are indicated according to liturgical practice with the high altar at the liturgical east, in the case of S. Romolo, to the actual north.
