Notes

  • [a] According to J. Wood Brown (p. 128), the chapel was initially decorated with the Bardi family arms, which were taken down in 1356 by the new patron Paolo d'Antonio di M. Zanobi da Castagnolo.
  • [b] The traditional assignment of patronage rights in the chapel's earliest phase has been assigned to the Bardi family, though no documentation has been found to support the claim that Marco di Bernardo Bardi sold his family's rights to Paolo di Antonio di Messer Zanobi da Castagnuolo in 1356.
  • [c] The Boni family had certainly secured rights to the transept chapel by the fifteenth century, but whether from the da Castagnuolo family or directly from the friars remains unclear, as does the date of acquisition.
  • [d] Though it is not known when Marco Bardi acquired rights to the Santa Maria Novella transept chapel, according to Brown (p. 128), he sold them in 1356 after receiving permission from his kinsmen.
  • [e] Though it is not known when messer Antonio Bardi acquired rights to the Santa Maria Novella transept chapel, according to Brown (p. 128), he gave permission to his kinsman Marco di Bernardo to sell them in 1356.
  • [f] Though it is not known when Jacopo Bardi acquired rights to the Santa Maria Novella transept chapel, according to Brown (p. 128), he gave permission to his kinsman Marco di Bernardo to sell them in 1356.
  • [g] According to J. Wood Brown, Paolo di Antonio di Messer Zanobi da Castagnolo purchased rights to the first transept chapel to the right of the high altar at Santa Maria Novella from Marco di Bernardo Bardi. Brown notes that he removed the Bardi family arms and tomb. He makes no mention of what he did with the chapel after that, but at some point prior to 1486 it had been sold again to the Boni family, a transaction not mentioned by Brown (1902, p. 128).
  • [h] Bono is the most likely candidate to have acquired the transept chapel. It passed to two of his sons, who sold it to Filippo Strozzi in 1486.
