Notes

  • [a] Though the inscription names both the Bagnesi and Rinieri families, it only carried the arms of the Bagnesi whereas the nearby tabernacle carried both.
  • [b] The inscription commemorating the altar's renovation in 1619 credits the original installation to ancestors but does not specify which ones or when.
  • [c] Neri di Bicci painted an altarpiece showing the Annunciation for the Bagnesi altar that was the first on the right upon entering the church. The painting was taken to Santa Maria Novella in 1629, where it remains today.
  • [d] In addition to refashioning the altar with a new commemorative inscription, the Bagnesi ordered a new altarpiece from Morosini depicting the Annunciation, the same subject painted by Neri di Bicci less than a century earlier.
  • [e] According to the 1619 inscription, Caterina Rinieri Bagnesi added decoration and endowment to the ancient Bagnesi altar in San Remigio.
