S. Jacopo Soprarno

Located on the south side of the Arno just east of Ponte Santa Trinita, the church of San Jacopo Soprarno was extant in the 11th century, if not the 10th. It was designated as a parish church in the early twelfth century. In the sixteenth century it was home to a group of Franciscan friars and then the Scopetini until 1703. The church was significantly renovated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but traces of its Romanesque origins are visible in the facade and interior.

Notes

  • [a] San Jacopo soprarno was named as one of 36 parrocchie among the original 48 parishes established at the start of the commune, and it was suppressed in 1785 as part of the parochial reforms of Pietro Leopoldo.
  • [b] The Scopetini moved from S. Lucia sul Prato to S. Jacopo in 1575. Fourteen canons were in residence at the 1632 census. They were forced out by Duke Cosimo III in 1703 to make way for the Padri della Missione.
