[a] According to Rosselli, the church was founded, according to tradition, by Carlo, Conte di Montegranelli, who had retired to lead a religious life in the company of friars of St. Jerome.
[b] The hermitage of San Girolamo was renovated under the patronage of Giovanni di Cosimo de'Medici (1416–69) by the sculptor and architect Michelozzo di Bartolomeo (1396-1472), who had built the family palace in Florence for Cosimo.
[c] The church received a new porch and painted decoration in the seventeenth century.
