The original church of S. Maria in Verzaia stood outside the Porta San Frediano until its destruction during the siege of Florence. After 1530 it was moved within the walls taking over the church of San Lorenzino in Borgo San Frediano. Stefano Rosselli described the memorials as they were in 1580, noting without further explanation that the altars he describes were no longer visible in 1657. The church was suppressed in 1785 and subsequently destroyed.
