Dieci di balìa o della guerra (Ten of mercy or war) The Dieci di Balìa was created with a provision of 3 October 1383 as a group of Executive Commissioners to be in charge of military affairs and the conduct of war; the word balìa refers to the act of granting extraordinary powers as they were an extraordinary body of the city. The Ten were appointed by election for six months or a year and were entrusted with the care of foreign policy and, above all, the direction of the military operations of the republic. [a] Having no children, Tuccio named his nephews, the sons of his brother Antonio, as his heirs.
[b] According to Passerini (1583, p. 463), Tuccio was elected to the Dieci della balía for the war against the Aragonese in Naples.
[c] Passerini (1583, p. 463) indicates that Tuccio was podestà of Castelfranco di sotto in 1448.
[d] Tuccio made a bequest of 100 gold florins to re-endow his family's chapel with an obligation for a mass on the feast of the Assumption and the day afterwards for his soul. He also requested masses in honor of Francesco di Giovanni di Taddeo Ferrucci da Fiesole and his relatives on July 28th. Carmine records show that his descendants, nephews Leonardo and Niccolò d'Antonio, refinanced their portion of the bequest in 1507 with proceeds from a workshop in via delli Stracciaiolo near the church of San Leo and continued to make payments through 1525. Another descendant, great-nephew Ruberto di Leonardo, arranged for his portion to be paid from proceeds from a house in the parish of S. Pier Buonconsiglio in via del Forese. [e] Given that Tuccio left a bequest for annual masses on August 15 and 16 in the family chapel dedicated to the Assumption, it seems highly likely that he was buried in the family tomb at the foot of its altar.
