da Ghiacceto, Guasparre di Francesco di Lapo di S. Francesco di S. Giovanni

Description

Though Guaspare di Francesco da Ghiacceto inherited a tomb in the crypt of Santa Croce, he decided to install a new one in the church nave. By 1418 a holy water stoup (pila) carrying his name (Guaspar Francisci de Ghiacceto), coat of arms, and date of installation, had been installed in the first bay of the nave in front of the northwest face of the pier separating the nave from the south (right) aisle. The 1439 inventory notes that the tomb at the font's foot was not complete (ammatonata), and it was decorated with a marble slab carrying his name (now worn away) coat of arms, and date of death on 4 March 1433 (o.s.) at some point between 1440 and about 1450.

Notes

  • [a] "Ghuaspare di Francescho" gave his age as 40 in his 1427 catasto declaration.
  • [b] Though the top line of the inscription is worn away, Guaspare's tomb in Santa Croce provides his date of death as 4 March 1433 (o.s.)
  • [c] Guaspare had rights to the gravesite from at least 1418, the date on the tomb's pier marker and water font. His name, originally along the top edge of the slab, has worn away, confusing some sepoltuarists and later scholars to believe that the tomb honored his father Francesco di Lapo. Though the inscription carries Guaspare's date of dath (March 4, 1433 o.s.), it was not installed until at least 1440, as attested by the 1439 sepoltuario.
  • [d] The marker installed in the pier over the tomb carries Guasparre's name and the date 1418, suggesting that it marked the grave at the foot of the water font he installed in the same year.
  • [e] The inscription around the rim of the stoup's basin names "Guaspar Francisci de Ghiacceto" as its patron in 1418.
  • [f] The sepoltuario of 1596 notes that a book dated 1439 noted one Guasparrone da Ghiacceto as the crypt tomb's owner. However, this is not the 1439 sepoltuario now kept in the Archivio di Stato di Firenze (Man. 619), which only names ser Lapo di Bonamico and his sons. Guasparre di Francesco died on March 4, 1434, but in 1427 he had noted his obligation to pay the friars of Santa Croce 4 florins per year for his ancestor's perpetual pietanza, presumably given at his death some time after 1298.
  • [g] Though he was present in his father's household in 1427, Cristofano does not appear in the family tree kept in the Carte Mariani Dei, unless he took on his father's name as a nickname after his death. Born when his father was only twenty, Cristofano may therefore have been an illegitimate child or possibly died young without issue, which could explain his absence in the family tree. Unfortunately he does not appear in the Online Tratte or other sources consulted for the family.
  • [h] There is no evidence that Guasparre had left his San Remigio home between 1427 and his death in 1434, but catasto declarations of his heirs would confirm whether that property had remained his.
  • [i] Guasparre declared his residence in his family's ancestral parish of San Remigio in his 1427 catasto declaration, suggesting that he was born and died there.
