To the best and greatest God. Giovanni Battista Pandolfini son of Pandolfo built this chapel with the greatest piety for Saint Stephen, and also he wanted a monument in this place for the descendants of this same family, which Roberto, his grandson by reason of his son, left in his will to be adorned with a marble pavement in the year of our Lord 1592.

[a] Ruberto left money in his testament for new pavement in the chapel including the tomb that carries his name and those of his grandfather and ecclesiastical kin, a project designed by Giambologna and carried out by his children.
[b] The heirs of Battista's grandson Roberto installed a large, multi-stone marker in the floor of the family chapel in 1592, which included an inscription at the center honoring Battista as the chapel's founder but no mention of his date of death.
[c] Cardinal Niccolò died on September 17th, 1518 in Pistoia and was buried in a temporary deposit in the city's cathedral. Eugenio Gamurrini reports that the cardinal's remains were brought to the Badia for reburial in the Pandolfini family chapel not long after his death: "fù doppo poco tempo condotto a Fiorenza, e messo in questa nostra Badia nella Cappella quivi edificata di nuovo da Batista di Pandolfo Pandolfini suo Nipote" (V, p. 120), again in a deposit. The year 1519 cited in Niccolò's honorary inscription may be based on this second burial, which is unfortunately not recorded in the Badia's Libro dei defunti.
[d] The large tomb marker installed by the heirs of Roberto Pandolfini in 1592 includes an inscription honoring Bishop Giannozzo, noting his year of death in 1525. The Badia's Libro dei defunti does not note whether his remains were brought to the Badia from Troia for reburial.
[e] Bishop Ferrando died in Troia in 1560. The Badia's Libro dei defunti does not note whether his remains were brought to the family chapel, where a tomb installed in 1592 notes his name, office, and year of death.
[f] The Libro dei defunti only says that Fra Carlo was buried in "nostra chiesa," which would seem to mean the tomb at the foot of the altar stairs except that if this cavaliere di Malta was in fact the son of Ruberto di Filippo then he was of Battista's line which used the chapel for burial.
[g] The Libro dei defunti records that Filippo's burial was carried out by the Compagnia della Misericordia.
