He departed to the Lord in the year of the Lord 1302 during the 15th indiction on day 14 of December, whose soul may rest in peace.

Given that the 15th Indiction fell in 1302, rather than in 1300 (ind. XIII), the tombstone must have been damaged at the date. as suggested by one of the two drawings in Baldovinetti's sepoltuario.

Notes

  • [a] The tomb slab was discovered during the repaving of the piazza della Signoria on 14 October 1722, six feet below ground, in the area of the former cemetery of the parish church that had been partly usurped during the expansion of the piazza in the 1340s. Richa notes that numerous bones had been found in the area, confirming the presence of the documented cemetery, but the tombstone discovered towards the east side of the piazza in the vicinity of the original church building, was highly treasured and installed in the wall of the parish church next to the Cederni family chapel. It has since been lost.
  • [b] The slab, which had originally been installed either in the old church or, as Richa suggests, in the parish cemetery, was discovered by workers repaving the piazza della Signoria.
  • [c] The tomb had been built over at some point prior to the mid sixteenth century, for Stefano Rosselli does not mention it. It was rediscovered in 1722, as reported in the contemporaneous Priorista Mariani, during repaving of the church floor. The Priorista cites the most complete inscription, which also appears in eighteenth-century printed sources.
  • [d] Baldovinetti notes that the slab was discovered on October 14th, 1722 and that it was moved to the church of San Romolo, but it is not clear whether that all occurred in one day or over several.
