The church of Sant'Apollinare has undergone numerous changes over its long history, making it difficult to identify its interior spaces, including a significant renovation to what was likely a fourteenth-century church in 1636, its deconsecration in 1737, conversion into offices (1756) and then the debtors prison known as the Stinche Nuove (1782). In 1879 it was reconfigured as a evangelical church oriented to the south with its entrance on via della Vigna Vecchia. Only the external walls and little cloister of the original Sant'Apollinare survive.
