Notes

  • [a] Construction of the original monastery began the year after its founders secured land on which to build a small church and monastic residence, which were eventually replaced with larger buildings in the fourteenth century.
  • [b] In the spring of 1294, monastery's founders, don Orlando and fra Guittone d'Arezzo purchased land close by the city's second set of defensive walls along what is today via degli Alfani. The foundation document between fra Guittone and the Camaldolese prior general is kept in the Archivio di Stato di Firenze, Diplomatico, S. Maria degli Angioli, 7 settembre 1293. See Cécile Caby in De Benedictis et al., p. 19.
  • [c] The first monastery for the Camaldolese community in Florence was constructed fairly rapidly in the late thirteenth century.
  • [d] According to George R. Bent, the monastery undertook several major construction programs, including the rebuilding of the chapter house, the rebuilding of the sacristy chapel, the almost complete renovation of the church, and the commissioning of a new high altarpiece in the third quarter of the fourteenth century.
  • [e] For more on the deconsecration of the church in July 1868 and the conversion of the church into a library, see Belli and Ricci in De Benedictis et al., p. 440.
