district, in the case of Florence a subdivision of a sector or quarter responsible for maintaining a militia company under a single banner or standard (gonfalone)
Citizens of Florence could claim membership in a gonfalone other than where they lived for purposes of taxation and political sortition, usually that of their father or other ancestor and related to where the family traditionally held its highest-value properties. The 1427 catasto contains numerous examples of a declared residence (casa per abitazione) in a parish not physically located in the gonfalone from which the tax declaration was made. Residence is "surmised" when extrapolated from political service or tax records that do not indicate the parish of residence and "documented" when the physical location of a house is known.

[a] Ceramelli Papiani 535 associates the Benci with Leon Nero, and family members held the priorate from this district from 1517 through 1530.
[b] Francesco di Piero di M. Giovanni Dini moved to the Leon Nero district no later than 1439 when he was placed in its sortition purse for the Sixteen, which he served in early 1441. According to the Priorista Mariani completed in 1722, Giuseppe Maria d'Agostino Dini was living in Borgo di Santa Croce.
[d] Santa Croce burial records refer to Antonio as Antonio di Bardo Tintore degl’Altoviti, and his son claimed his residence in Corso dei Tintori in 1427.
[e] Camillo di Lorenzo filed his catasto declaration from this district, but it is unclear where he and his family were living.
[f] Bartolo di Cece served this district in the Tre Maggiori.
[g] Nofri di Forese served this quarter and gonfalon in the Tre Maggiore and as Wool Guild Consul
[h] In 1429, Carlo di Zanobi da Ghiacceto registered his birth as in the Leon Nero district of the Santa Croce quarter, the district associated with his family's priors from 1349 through 1522. However, he spent some of his adult life renting a house in the Oltrarno. Consultation of his catasto declarations after 1427 would confirm whether he returned to his ancestral neighborhood or remained in the Santo Spirito quarter.
[i] Paolo da Ghiacceto was elected to the Tre Maggiori from this district.
[j] Zanobi served in the Tre maggiori from the Leon Nero district.
[k] his son Domenico gained citizenship in this gonfalone
[l] Francesco was elected from this district in late 1470
